Logline
A woman wakes up in the Thai jungle, bloodied and handcuffed, with no memory of who she is, and a man’s voice in her head. Now she must figure out who she is and what has happened to her.
What is it?
An arthouse psychological thriller (feature film), shot on location in Chiangmai, Thailand. The film explores themes of emotional manipulation, lost identity, and the insidious effects of the lies we tell ourselves and others. Currently in postproduction.
Director: Zhang "Meng" Mengjie is a Chinese-born film director currently living in Chiangmai Thailand (where Burning Rain was shot and produced). Her surrealist style imbues the psychological thriller genre with a fresh and experimental look. She emphasizes characters' inner confusion and emotionality with visceral but surreal imagery, breaking clichés while keeping a film that is still thoroughly grounded in reality.
Writers: Will Seaton and Zhang Mengjie partnered on the screenwriting. Will focused on early drafts and story structure, while Meng brought the story visually to life with detailed scene and character development. Both lead actors also contributed to the dialogue and character writing.
Director of Photography: "Victor" Suparawee Patravanich is an experienced cinematographer born and based in Chiangmai Thailand. He was selected for this project due to his love for low-light and night shots, and his technical ability to make a darker film without losing image quality. His Netflix show "Hurts Like Hell" showcases his experimental approach to darkness and lighting - a style that he pushes even further in Burning Rain.
Lead Actors: "Namwa" Panicha Phatcharamontri (playing Fon) is a Chiangmai-based Thai performance and visual artist, selected for the role due to her natural grasp of the character, and her subtlety on screen. James "Blake" Palmer (playing James) is a Chiangmai-based American writer, art critic, and curator, who brings an unsettling charisma and sense of trust to the character James.
